Pacific College Externship Descriptions - New York Campus Initiative for Women with Disabilities, Hospital for Joint Diseases The Initiative for Women with Disabilities is a multi-disciplinary, women's center, providing medical and gynecological services. Interns introduce acupuncture to women with disabilities and chronic conditions. Educational advocacy and social service programs are also offered. This is a challenging externship. Interns should expect to work in a fast-paced environment, treating 3-5 patients per shift. Assistance with patients' mobility (i.e. lifting patients on and off beds) may be necessary. Prospective interns should possess patience, compassion and professionalism for a unique learning experience. A second shift has been added due to positive client response.
Grand Meridian Community Clinic Located in the rear of the Kamwo Herb and Tea Company, the Grand Meridian Community Clinic offers acupuncture treatments and herbal consultations. Supervisors teach aspects of Eastern Nutrition through the preparation soups and teas. Samples from Kamwo's extensive pharmacy help interns with Herb identification. Interns see patients visiting Chinatown from all over the world. Referrals come from Metropolitan Hospital , western MD's offices and a nonprofit neighborhood organization. Students have the opportunity to participate in herb processing (e.g., honey-fried herbs) and work in the extensive pharmacy filling herbal prescriptions as well as providing acupuncture treatments.
St. John's Riverside Hospital St. John's Riverside Hospital is a 190-bed health care facility located (and highly accessible by public transportation) in Westchester County , NY . Interns treat a varied patient within the hospital's complementary health division. This externship offers the chance to begin documenting hospital involvement and building experience that can be used when applying for future positions within similar settings.
The Fortune Society - www.fortunesociety.org The Fortune Society, a nonprofit organization that helps prisoners, ex-offenders, and those facing prison time, offers counseling, career development, education, advocacy, and substance abuse and HIV treatment. Interns learn about the growing field of acupuncture for substance abuse, performing traditional full body treatments as well as auricular treatments.
St. Vincent's Hospital-H.I.V. Center The HIV Center at St. Vincent's Hospital is the largest HIV program in the state of New York , and one of the oldest and largest HIV/AIDS clinics in the United States . The Center has been operating since the beginning of the epidemic in 1981. Located in the heart of Greenwich Village , the Center provides case management with coordinated outpatient and comprehensive inpatient primary care services to the HIV-positive community. Interns have the opportunity to provide individualized treatments for patients in conjunction with the full range of HIV Center services.
St. Vincent's Hospital-Comprehensive Cancer Center This is a program is a partnership between the Complementary Therapies Program at St. Vincent's Comprehensive Cancer Center and Pacific College-New York. Assistant Interns can observe and assist a Licensed Acupuncturist/supervisor working with M.D.s and Cancer Center staff providing comprehensive care, including alleviating pain, and mitigating side effects from chemotherapy and other treatments.
