  Veterans Receive a Hand-Up

During July, Student volunteers from Pacific College provided free massage and acupuncture treatments to homeless veterans at Stand Down, an annual event sponsored by Vietnam Veterans of San Diego. In its 14th year, the three-day event is held each summer to provide the homeless veteran population and their families with desperately needed services such as medical and dental care, eyeglasses, clothing, showers, haircuts and referrals to housing/recovery programs.

Of the 747 men, women and children who attended the event, 350 received massage or acupuncture by Pacific volunteers. Many were treated for conditions such as chronic back and joint pain and drug addiction. Only requests for meals, haircuts or court services outnumbered those treated with Pacific's care.

Pacific volunteers treated the physical needs of the veterans with great care and professionalism, helping veterans' immediate need as well as providing hope to many. Mitch Lehman, Pacific College graduate and licensed acupuncturist, spearheaded Pacific's involvement at Stand Down in 2000, and is currently working to place Pacific students in internship positions with Vietnam Veterans of San Diego in the future.
