Pacifics Senior Clinic Visited by Congressman Filner On November 13, 2000, Congressman Bob Filner visited Pacific
Colleges
Free Clinic for Seniors at the First Lutheran Church in San Diego. Pacifics
Director of Off-site Clinics, Ana DeVedia, invited Congressman Filner to visit
the facility during a time when bills regarding the coverage of acupuncture
by Medicare were being considered in the House and Senate. Congressman Filner
toured the facilities, observed patient treatments, and spoke with seniors
who gave testimonials on the benefits of the treatments they are receiving. The Free Clinic for Seniors operates on Wednesday and Friday mornings in four rooms of the First Lutheran Church in downtown San Diego. The clinic has been very busy since it opened its doors in May, with approximately 10 interns treating an average 30 to 40 seniors each day with acupuncture. Traditional Chinese Medicine suits the needs of the elderly by alleviating chronic and acute pain, insomnia, depression, pulmonary and gastrointestinal complaints, post stroke paralysis, etc. without the harsh side effects of some medications. The Free Clinic for Seniors was formed to serve the elderly residents
of the area with various modalities of Chinese medicine and is the direct
extension
of other Pacific College outreach programs. The vision is to create a community
clinic staffed by Pacific College faculty and students with the administrative
assistance of volunteers. Recognizing that being needed and feeling purposeful
are both important to the senior population, the clinic is soliciting volunteer
help from the patients to create a welcoming, informative and caring environment. National Massage Therapy
Awareness Week Pacific College invited the public to receive complimentary massages
by its massage program students. One body therapy class was opened to
the public each day. The participants were able to enjoy the benefits
of Foot Reflexology, Tui Na, and Swedish massage. During the course of
the week, over 140 individuals turned out to participate, making the
first-time event a big success. In addition to receiving massage, participants
were able to speak with students and faculty about the benefits of massage
and the colleges body therapy programs. Many of the events participants
expressed their gratitude and enthusiasm about the event as well as an
interest in other Pacific events and programs. PCOM Students Serve Up Bodywork to Help Disabled Athletes The U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship is the premier wheelchair tournament in the United States and one of the most prestigious events in the disabled sports world. Top athletes from all over the U.S. as well as those representing twenty-five different countries participated in this years event.
