In Memorium: Joseph Lazzaro
April 1, 1946–November 25, 2000

Joseph Lazzaro was a licensed acupuncturist. He was also one of the earliest and most influential pioneers of traditional Oriental medicine in San Diego. From 1982 to 1986, he served as the chief administrative officer of California Acupuncture College. While managing the business of the college, he also earned his diploma of acupuncture and successfully passed the California acupuncture licensing examination. With two partners, he founded the Pacific Center of Health in Hillcrest. He served as the Center’s managing partner.

Joe’s magnum opus was the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, which he founded with three partners in 1986. He served as its president, and recently, as chairman of the board. In these capacities Joe exhibited, not only immense creativity, but a sincere desire to see the college grow into an institution that would demonstrate the benefits of the medicine that so helped him and his thousands of patients. He realized his desire. Since its inception, Joe saw the college grow from a student body of 60 to nearly 1000. Its one-room schoolhouse grew into three large campuses. Its five-bed clinic grew to 40 treatment rooms and over a dozen offsite internships in San Diego and New York community facilities. From its first small graduating class, Pacific College alumni now circle the globe. They made Joe proud. They made him smile.

Joe was an inspiration. His creativity was boundless. At the college’s board meetings he produced a steady stream of possibilities. He had confidence that within the quantity we’d discover the quality. He loved his partners for encouraging him. They loved him for what he encouraged. The institutions and relationships that Joe leaves behind continue as a testament to his endless optimism. Joe was right when he said that the world needed traditional Oriental medicine. Those who knew him know that the world needed him, as well. Thank you for everything you did and for everything you were, Joe. We will always love you.
