By Greg Ruvolo: In Tune with His Patients

For patients, students, teachers and inquisitive admirers alike, TCM continually has a lesson to teach. It didn't take long for Greg Ruvolo to learn about the amazing results that can be achieved with inner balance, the real byproduct of Oriental medicine.

Greg Ruvolo, a member of the first graduating class of Pacific College in New York, has a long history of positive interpersonal relationships. His passion for life, spirit, healing and music began as early as he can remember. But the turning point in his life, about 15 years ago, put him on a journey that will continue for many years to come. When Ruvolo was faced with a medical condition that seemed almost hopeless, he turned to alternative health avenues, including acupuncture, herbs, yoga, Taiji, Qigong, meditation and nutrition. He found that this total system of internal medicine—comprised of a diagnostic system based on signs and symptoms, as well as a treatment system that includes acupuncture, herbal preparation, diet, massage, heat, exercise and meditation—was the life that he not only wanted to live…but one that he wanted to share.

While a successful musician for over 25 years, Ruvolo came to realize that his “classical” training could support his ability to perform in many disciplines…from classical to pop to jazz, with large ensembles of 60 or more to quartets, trios and duos. In much the same way, he excels in every level of Chinese medicine. Ruvolo’s practice is in midtown New York, catering to patients with various needs. He says that they come to him initially for such complaints as tendinomuscular aches and pains, not realizing that his treatments can deal with many other problems, such as insomnia, depression, digestive irregularities, skin problems, allergies, and more. He soon teaches his clients that the traditional Chinese approach of balance for the whole being is a way of life, achieved through attention to the interrelationship of body and mind. The balance of life and health is truly akin to a finely tuned instrument.

When meeting Ruvolo for the first time, many people feel they have known him for years. That is why word of mouth has helped to make his practice the success that it has become. Ruvolo has a very busy practice and teaches both at Pacific College and the Swedish Institute. He stays active as a professional trumpet player and as an active participant in the Oriental Medicine community.

For most, the discovery of Traditional Chinese Medicine is like finding a wonderful treasure. Ruvolo found the treasure chest, opened it, and is sharing the contents with everyone he meets.
